Is Chiropractic Care Safe for Seniors?

Chiropractic care can often be provided safely to older adults, but treatment should be adapted to the patient’s age, health, bone strength, medications, previous surgeries, neurological findings, and underlying spinal condition.

A healthy 35-year-old and an 80-year-old with osteoporosis and spinal stenosis should not automatically receive the same treatment.

Older patients commonly have degenerative arthritis, disc changes, spinal stenosis, joint replacements, balance problems, or other health conditions that influence treatment decisions. Appropriate care may therefore involve gentle mobilization, low-force chiropractic techniques, therapeutic exercise, soft-tissue treatment, or other conservative approaches rather than forceful manipulation.

Dr. Wayne Bennett is a board-certified Chiropractic Orthopedist with advanced training in complex musculoskeletal conditions. This additional training is particularly useful when determining which treatment approaches are appropriate for older or medically complicated patients.

Safety begins with careful evaluation and selecting the treatment that fits the patient.
